A central “character” in this year’s OBOJC selection, “By Fire, By Water” (Mitchell James Kaplan) is a dangerous manuscript, the possession (even existence) of which seems to imperil the lives of several characters. “Toledot Yeshu” (Life of Jesus) is an actual work – a medieval, midrashic pseudo-history that claims to tell the “real truth” about Jesus. It is a controversial text – embarrassing at times, condemned and denounced at others. We’ll examine its history and study selections of text.
