There are so many questions and answers in Judaism —
some really simple and some much more complicated.
And one of the coolest things about Judaism is how
we’re encouraged to ask questions and seek answers
in conversation with one another.
This blogcast does just that: answers questions.
Episode 7: What Do Jews Eat?
Elana and Robin welcome their colleague and friend, Alyse Unterberger, who is a former caterer and a great lover of food (Jewish and otherwise!) She is also a Jewish mother, so we all know she is skilled in feeding people! Alyse, Elana, and Robin talk about how “Jewish Cuisine” evolved in the United States, what we think of as “Jewish food” around the world, and what some of their family favorites are.
Episode 6: Why Do Jews Wear the Things They Wear?
Elana and Robin welcome their colleague and friend, char hersh, who in addition to being the Director of Administration, has worked in Jewish education for many years. They talk about everything from kippot to tzitzit, the rituals, the reasons, and the origins.
Episode 5: What is a B’nai Mitzvah?
Elana and Robin welcome their colleague and friend, Lisa Litman, who in addition to being the Director of jkidphilly, is also a b’nai mitzvah tutor and has worked in Jewish education for many years. They talk about what the difference is between a bar or bat mitzvah and a b’nai mitzvah, what practices are part of it, and other little-known details about this Jewish coming-of-age ritual.
Episode 4: Is the Torah Different from the Bible?
Elana and Robin delve into the Torah — what it is, how it’s different from the Bible (is it?), how it’s written, and how we care for it.
Episode 3: Is Yiddish Different Than Hebrew?
Elana and Robin invite their friend and colleague, Julia Weekes, a self-proclaimed yiddishe kop, to help them figure out all the ways that Yiddish is different than Hebrew. (Hint: it’s more than 4!) Stay tuned to hear Julia’s favorite Yiddish words and see how many of them you already knew!
Episode 2: Do Jews Believe in Heaven?
Elana and Robin invite their friend and colleague, Gabrielle Kaplan-Mayer to help them tackle the question of what Jews believe about the afterlife. Unsurprisingly, it resulted in many more questions!
Episode 1: Kashrut
Elana and Robin introduce the concept of a “blogcast” and how it’s different from the JLV Podcast,
which is available to members of the JLV Shomrim.
Robin asks a LOT of questions (more than 4!) and together, they explain the concept of kashrut —
kosher food, keeping kosher, and even a mention about “kosher for Passover.”
