The annual jkidphilly Grandparents’ Celebration is a wonderful opportunity for grandparents to engage in Jewish activities with their grandchildren. This year, the Grandparents’ Celebration will take place on September 11, 2016 from 2:00pm – 4:00pm at the Morris Arboretum. The event celebrates Jewish community by creating an inviting environment for families of all denominations from across the Philadelphia area. Co-chair Marcy Bacine shares her perspective on why the Grandparents’ Celebration is so special.

How did the Grandparents’ Celebration come about?

Years ago (before I became a grandparent), my great-nieces began receiving PJ Library books. I thought that there should be a way for Jewish families to say thank you to the agency that does this for us. When I learned about jkidphilly and joined the board of Jewish Learning Venture, I suggested that grandparents would be a great audience for a fundraising event. Grandparents are connectors – we’re passionate about wanting Jewish grandchildren to continue the traditions we grew up with.

What has been your favorite part of the celebrations?

I like the story walks – they engage us in a book that the kids may or may not know, and on each page there is a fun activity that families can do together. I also love being able to do something with our grandchildren in an open, Jewish venue. The celebration usually coincides with National Grandparents Day, so it’s also a great way to commemorate it.

What are you most looking forward to during this year’s event?

We’re looking to do a special program for older children so that grandparents can include all of their grandchildren in the fun. Our committee has selected Grandfather’s Coat for our storywalk, so I’m also excited to see how that turns out.

What would you to say to individuals or businesses who would like to support the event?

This is a great way for businesses to get their message out and to support Jewish community activities. Sponsor

s are able to facilitate this and so many other great jkidphilly events at any level they choose. It’s also a great way to show support for seniors and children.
